The compass that lives in your map case.

Phones die, GPS drifts under trees and cloud. A small baseplate compass weighs 22 grams and never needs charging. This one is transparent so you can lay it on the map, has a ruler and map scales along the edge for measuring distance, and a built-in magnifier for reading tight contour lines. Handy as a first compass for DofE, or as the backup that stays in the lid pocket.

Why we like it

• Clear ABS baseplate for taking bearings straight off the map
• Ruler and map scale markings for measuring legs
• Magnifying lens for small map detail
• 70 × 48 × 9 mm and 22 g: genuinely pocket-sized

Good to know

A compass is only as good as the person holding it. If you have never taken a bearing, an hour with an OS map and a YouTube tutorial before your walk is time well spent. Keep it away from phones, magnets and the car dashboard, which can throw the needle.
