A phone top-up from a sunny lunch stop.

The smaller of our two folding panels: 5 W, camouflage fabric, about 385 × 185 mm open and 3 mm thin, so it slides flat down the back of a rucksack. In direct sun it puts useful charge into a phone or headtorch over USB. It is not fast, and it does little under thick cloud, but on a bright multi-day walk it takes the edge off battery anxiety.

Why we like it

• 5 W output over USB for phones, headtorches and small power banks
• Folds flat and weighs very little
• Weather-resistant fabric backing
• Eyelets to hang from a pack or tent

Good to know

Solar panels charge best pointed directly at the sun, so lay it out at a lunch stop rather than relying on it bouncing on your back. For more output, see the 8 W version; for a battery to store the charge, the Roaming solar power bank.
